These are powerful dogs with a short coat that is easy to groom. They tail is usually docked. If these hounds are provided with sufficient care, they will live to be about 10-12 years of age.

The only accepted coat color in this breed is black with markings on cheeks, muzzle, chest and legs as well as over both eyes, that differ from tan to mahogany. Males of this breed range between 24 and 27 inches at the withers and weigh 95 to 135 pounds. Males are very massive, with larger frame and heavier bone than females. Females of this breed measure from 22 to 25 inches at the shoulders and weigh up to 100 pounds. These dogs are characterized as powerful, dignified, self-assured and aloof.
