They are easy to recognize by their size, muscular body, massive head and short black coat with rust markings. The accepted height for males varies from 24 to 27 inches at the withers; females vary from 22 to 25 inches. The height at the shoulders should be slightly shorter than the body length. The AKC registers this breed as Working Dogs; other registries classify it as a Non-sporting or Utility breed.
